Why I Love Photographing Families at Home Instead of a Studio

Maternity & Family

Most people think they have to book a studio.

When people picture family photos, they usually imagine a perfectly styled studio with a white backdrop, a cozy bed setup, or a beautiful nursery scene that’s been recreated for the day.

And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, it’s never been what pulls me in.

For this session, I also photographed a few rolls of 35mm film alongside my digital camera. I love the way film preserves these quiet, everyday moments. It feels nostalgic, timeless, and right at home in a space that’s already filled with so many memories.

I’m much more interested in the place where your family is already living their everyday life.

Your home.

Your home tells your family’s story.

Years from now, your kids won’t remember what studio you rented. But they’ll remember the hallway they learned to walk down.

The little nursery you spent months putting together. The couch where Saturday morning cartoons happened. The bedroom where everyone piled together before bedtime. Those spaces become part of your family’s history, often without you realizing it. When we photograph your family at home, we’re preserving more than what everyone looked like.

We’re preserving what life felt like.

Kids are almost always more comfortable at home.

One of the biggest reasons I love in-home sessions is how quickly everyone settles in. There isn’t pressure to perform or smile on command. Toddlers can wander into their playroom. Babies can take breaks whenever they need to. Parents don’t have to worry about packing half the house just to keep everyone happy. The session naturally follows your family’s rhythm instead of asking your family to adapt to a new environment. And honestly, that’s where the best moments usually happen.

The little moments become the big memories.

Some of my favorite photographs happen in between the “official” moments. Reading a favorite book together. Making pancakes. Rocking your baby before a nap. Playing with blocks on the bedroom floor. Tickling your toddler until everyone is laughing. Watching your little one peek through the crib rails. These aren’t activities we invent for photos. They’re moments that are already happening. I simply get to preserve them.

Thinking about an in-home family session?

If you’re hoping for photographs that feel honest, relaxed, and true to this season of life, an in-home session might be exactly what you’re looking for.

No perfect house required.

Just your family, exactly as you are.
