Elevate Your Wedding Getting Ready Experience

Getting Ready Wedding Photos, How to Make Them Feel Effortless and Beautiful

Getting ready photos set the tone for your entire wedding gallery. They are where the story begins. The laughter, the nerves, the details, the people you love most. What many couples don’t realize is how much the environment affects the look and feel of these photos. Light, space, clutter, and movement all shape the final result.

As a wedding photographer, I have found that with just a few intentional choices, your getting ready images can feel elevated, timeless, and full of emotion. Here are my top tips for beautiful getting ready wedding photos that not only look amazing but help your wedding morning feel calm and enjoyable.

1. Choose a Getting Ready Space with Natural Light

Natural light is the number one secret to stunning getting ready wedding photos. Rooms with big windows create soft, flattering light for your skin and your wedding details.

What to look for:

• Large windows
• Light-colored walls
• Open layouts
• Minimal décor
• High ceilings
• Neutral tones

Best options:

• Airbnbs or VRBO homes with bright interiors
• A well-lit bridal suite at your venue
• A clean, spacious room at home
• A hotel room with multiple windows and neutral tones

If you choose a hotel, ask the staff if hair and makeup can happen in a conference room so your suite stays clean for photos. This is one of the best-kept secrets for luxury weddings.

2. Keep the Window Area Clean and Clutter-Free

This single tip can transform your getting ready photos.

The window is where I create the most editorial, timeless images. When that space is filled with duffel bags, water bottles, food containers, and wrappers, it distracts from the moment and can limit what we can create.

A simple rule:

All bags, snacks, purses, clothes, and personal items go to one designated corner.
Not near the windows. Not on the bed. Not where you will be photographed.

A few minutes of tidying makes a world of difference in your images.

3. Give Both Partners a Beautiful Getting Ready Space

Grooms often get tucked into basements, dark rooms, or cluttered man caves. They deserve a calm, bright, intentional space too. If possible, choose a well-lit room for both of you so the storytelling feels balanced from start to finish.

4. Wear Something You Love Before the Wedding Attire Goes On

There are many candid portraits taken before you step into your dress or suit.

Great options include:
• Matching PJ sets
• Silk robes
• Linen or neutral loungewear
• A chic getting-ready set for both partners

These small choices elevate the look of your photos and create a cohesive, luxury aesthetic.

5. Have All Wedding Details Ready for Your Photographer

Detail photos help tell the full story of your day and look incredible when captured in good light.

Set aside:
• Your wedding dress
• Shoes
• Jewelry
• Rings
• Tie or bowtie
• Stationery suite
• Perfume or cologne
• Veil
• Vow books
• Any sentimental items
• Fresh florals

Having everything together saves time and keeps the morning flowing smoothly.

6. Steam Wedding Attire the Night Before

Wrinkles show in photos. Anything that needs steaming should be done ahead of time so the morning feels stress-free. This includes pajamas, robes, suits, ties, bowties, and the dress.

And if no one knows how to tie the bowtie, clip-ons are the secret to keeping everything looking perfect.

7. Keep the Room Calm by Limiting How Many People Are Inside

A packed room becomes chaotic very quickly. If possible, limit how many people are present during key moments like putting on the wedding dress or suit.

Fewer people means:
• Less clutter
• More emotional intimacy
• More space to move
• Better photo opportunities
